What is AVID?
  • Teaches skills and behaviors for academic success
  • Provides intensive support and strong student/teacher relationships
  • Creates a positive peer group for students
  • Develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination
As an AVID school, our mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.  We believe it’s our students’ job to start thinking, dreaming and preparing for our future today because it’s never too early to start.

Here at Ho’okele Elementary, we strive to provide equal access to all students, help students develop organizational skills, instill student success skills and inspire belief in academic rigor and success. With the AVID philosophy, we Hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and in turn, they will be able to rise to various challenges.

Here are some strategies for connecting home and school study habits.
At School
  • “Act” like a successful student.
  • Use organizational skills.
  • Use note-taking skills.
  • Talk to your teachers.
  • Be goal-oriented.
  • Be flexible.
  • Show confidence in academic achievement.
  • Know when you understand and when you don’t. Ask questions.
  • Take responsibility for your learning.
  • Work independently.
  • Study in groups.
  • Use class time wisely.
  • Participate in school activities.
  • Use the Study Buddy system.
At Home
  • Complete homework.
  • Use organizational skills.
  • Review class notes.
  • Talk to others about school and learning.
  • Be goal-oriented.
  • Be flexible.
  • Show confidence in academic achievement.
  • Know when you understand and when you don’t.
  • Take responsibility for your learning.
  • Establish a study area.
  • Be consistent.
  • Take initiative to practice basic skills.
  • Seek further knowledge of content areas as well as your other interests, especially when no homework is assigned

Make school your child’s “job”.
Don’t forget to celebrate short-and long-term goals.
